The shape and size of the grinding wheel are mainly selected according to the conditions of the grinding machine, the shape of the workpiece, the nature of the material and so on. Generally, the appearance and crack identification are still required after the grinding wheel is selected, but sometimes the crack is not easy to observe inside the grinding wheel, so the sound inspection method should be used. If the sound is listened to by tapping with a mallet, the sound is a good grinding wheel without cracks.
Unbalanced grinding wheel will vibrate when rotating at high speed, which will affect the processing quality and machine tool accuracy. In severe cases, it will also cause grinding wheel fracture, endangering the safety of personnel and equipment. The main causes of unbalance are uneven density of each part of the grinding wheel, asymmetric geometry and eccentric installation. Therefore, the grinding wheel must be balanced before installation.
Grinding soft materials to choose a hard grinding wheel, grinding hard materials to choose a soft grinding wheel; the finer the grinding wheel size, the smaller the roughness value, the larger the diameter of the grinding wheel, increasing the width of the grinding wheel can reduce the surface roughness. Improving the balance accuracy of the grinding wheel, the rotation accuracy of the grinding machine spindle, the motion stability of the worktable and the rigidity of the whole process system, and reducing the vibration during grinding can greatly improve the surface roughness.
